Casio has almost completely embraced connected technology in its mainstream watches. The smartest technology has found its way into the GShock and Pro Trek watch series, from the Pro Trek WSDF30 and Pro Trek PRTB50 to the latest GShock GBDH1000 Move.
Now, with the GWFA1000, Casio has brought its most basic level of connectivity to the dive-centric, groundbreaking Frogman watch line. It's not what you would call a regular smartwatch, but uses bluetooth technology to extend the watch lifeline, while adding relevant dive features at the same time.
The new Frogman diving watch offers more than just a technological update. The previously digital dial was replaced with an analog dial and then encased in the brand's flagship carbon monocoque body.
While the GWFA1000 has an analog movement, it is clearly still a GShock Frogman in design. Those familiar with the series will recognize the asymmetrical style of the trademark and the iconic frog logo on the back of the case. The asymmetrical shape prevents the case from hitting your wrist when it is folded and makes it easier to press the buttons. There are four buttons in total, of which only the one to the left of the case is immediately visible. The other two flank the very impressively designed and sturdy crown.
With its carbon monocoque construction, Casio was able to remove the button guards on previous Frogman watches while maintaining overall strength and lightness of the watch. It weighs 119 grams (0.26 pounds), less than the 141 grams of the previous generation watch. That's an improvement, but the weight is definitely felt on the wrist. Even if you try tampering with the Frogman or any other GShock and you will likely fail.
It's really big too, with a 56mm case and a colossal 19mm thickness. Again, the size shouldn't come as a surprise. The Frogman has always been one of GShock's largest and most iconic watches, and the A1000 is no exception. The thickness alludes to the main characteristic of the GShock which is toughness. The all-in-one carbon case encapsulates the movement and technology inside, giving the watch excellent shock protection and ISO certified 200 meter water resistance.
It is resistant to magnetic fields and vibrations and the dial is covered with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The thick fluoroelastomer band is attached to the watch with large pins through the carbon / resin case and is itself resistant to water and dirt. The portability, combined with the unique design and helpful technology, is what defines the love for GShock watches.
